Christmas

As far as excitment goes, Christmas Eve is probably the most exciting day of the year. Every child has made multiple rounds past the Christmas tree to see if anything new has been layed out with the younger ones asking if Santa has already come (I put out a to Michelle from Santa present by accident). I can hear them downstairs talking about what they think they are getting. It really doesn't get much more exciting than that in the Clark house. Christmas day is usually the big anti-climax, when they realize that they got more of what they needed than what they wanted. I'll be happy if I get a couple of good books.

I also lit a fire in our fireplace for the first time. Our children were pretty happy about that. Jared curled up next to the fireplace with his Gameboy (whatever happened to books?) and was in heaven.

I hope everybody has a good Christmas. Ours has been very nice thus far.

Even More Dysfunction

So today I was grateful that the children went back to school since they had been home from Tuesday at 1p.m. (Early release because of the storm) until today, Friday. They needed to go back even though it's only a day so they wouldn't go absolutely crazy this weekend.

Well apparently Jared had way too much energy and took a Dare from another kid.

Jared called 911 from the Hall phone at school and then, AND THEN AND THEN . . .

LIED about it to the principal.

Nice. So now he has Saturday School. Jared didn't realize that he was on camera so he was totally busted.

So now Jared is outside scraping every single piece of ice off of our driveway with a fork.

Ha ha, just kidding, we did give him the shovel.

So much for Family Togetherness

On Wednesday was our SNOW DAY. I posted all about our plans and how great it would be to do all that baking. Especially since I had started all that baking the night before and wanted to finish.

Well so much for that.

We all woke around 7a.m., then within an hour, all the children wanted to go outside and play in the snow.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? SERIOUSLY, IT WAS COLD OUT.

But they did. Now granted it was only 8a.m. I insisted they have breakfast, do their jobs and chill a bit on the inside before majorly chilling on the outside. I think my having them inside together as a family lasted all of another hour and then by 9a.m. they all bolted. Except for Caleb who spent a good portion of his day on the computer.

It had continued to snow so all those pictures from the last post were nothing like what it ended up being, then it blew around and got super nasty out. Nasty enough that school was cancelled for a 2nd day.

Well back to Wednesday for a minute:

Brenden had gone to the basement and ran upstairs yelling, "There's a brown goo stuff coming out of the drain of the washer all over the floor and under the wall in the basement."

Oh the joyous words those are to hear.

So Jason, Caleb and I run to the basement to discover that our garbage disposal to the kitchen sink had somehow backed up into the downstairs washing machine drain and sink.

In fact there was brown goo, everywhere. And when I say everywhere, I mean UNDER the washing machine, UNDER the dryer, UNDER the wall into where the furnace is. UNDER the wall into where we store food and suitcases and other junk of no meaning.

YUCK. It was nasty. At least it wasn't sewage. Oh my am I ever grateful it wasn't that. Sick, Sick, Sick that would have been.

So we proceeded to run all over the house for our nasty and oldest towels so we could clean up the mess, then it was so bad that we had to get the good towels and continue cleaning up the mess.

Then Jason had to run to the local hardware store to get a SNAKE to snake out the drain from both upstairs and down for over 2 hours and then it backed up again and he snaked some more.

After a very long day and lots of cleaning and me pouring bleach under the wall and having many scrubbing moments of cleanser on the basement floor, I am grateful for the following:

1. That our basement is not yet finished or this mess would have been super worse
2. That all the towels in the house had been clean and dry so they could soak up the nastiness
3. That the mess was NOT sewage and no sewage pipes were involved
4. That Jason was home.
5. That Jason snaked it and finally got it unclogged.
6. That it's all cleaned up and over with
7. That I now have clean DRY towels once again.

So that was our Wednesday. How was yours?

Snow Day

The best thing about lots of snow is the Snow Day that comes with it.
I love having the children home to

1. Sleep in. Today we all slept in till 7a.m. which is a new record in this house.

2. Bake cookies. That started last night, we made Russian Wedding cookies (you know the balls that are cooked and then covered in powdered sugar) love them. Then we made chocolate chip cookies and dipped a bunch of pretzels in chocolate. Today the plan is peanut butter cookies, sugar cookies, no-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies and Oatmeal raisin cookies. They also want rice crispy treats and Muddy Buddies (chex cereal with the choc. peanut butter and powdered sugar)

Then we will make up at least 10 plates, pick out some families and deliver them all tomorrow night. I would say tonight, but we are under a huge blizzard right now, winds are expected to reach 35 to 50 m.p.h. by this afternoon and evening and travel is not advised. I'm hoping the power stays on because wind chills are expected to be 20 or more below zero. OUCH.

3. Everything is closed. Even the Mall.

4. We get to stay in our jammies all day.

5. No classes to teach. No plasma to donate. No places to shop at. No school to attend. No concerts to go to tonight. No work to go to. Nothing to attend to except for family togetherness and baking.

In fact last night we had a FHE. Yes on a Tuesday, but we were all together (a rarity these days with Caleb being in so many school activities) so we had a wonderful evening filled with a Christmas song, talking about traditions for our family. All the Children picked a name out of a bowl to see who they will purchase or make a gift for. Then we planned out what we will do for another family this year. There was a lot of Laughter, too much Fighting and complaining, but a lot of Love!
Best thing I learned from our family meeting last night is what each of my children like to see or do around Christmas time.
Caleb loves outdoor lights. I should have guessed this since his 3rd word he ever said was "IGHTS" meaning Lights. 1st word Ma, 2nd word NO.
Daniel loves everything to do with snow, building forts and snowboarding.
Jared said he likes having Real Pizza on Christmas Eve, where we order it and they bring it to us.
One year we tried to make it and the yeast was bad and the entire crust stunk and the pizza was a bomb. So we will go back to our tradition of ordering it from the Pizza Man (as Jared puts it) and then tipping the driver extra since it's Christmas!
Brenden like baking cookies with me and eating lots of different types of cookies.
Alyssa loves Snow stuff, like building the Snowman and sledding.
Scott said, "I love anything with SNOW!"
So much fun when there is lots of snow. Enough you can't go drive in it, but you can play in it. Here are a few pictures of our snow:

Jason doesn't look too impressed about going out to shovel it. I didn't realize he didn't have boots anymore, they have completely worn out and were thrown out a few years back.
So he's out in this in tennis shoes. Not fun. Predictions of snow for our area were 10 inches, looks like we only had 6-8, but that's just fine.

Snow

It snowed last night and stuck to the ground.

I'm not impressed.

I love Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I love the food, the football, the family, really just about everything about the day is great. I also appreciate the opportunity I have to reflect on the things with which I have been blessed. Although I like to complain about my pay at times, I am extrememly grateful to not only have a job but a job I enjoy. I am grateful for my family - at least when we are not all stuffed inside a van for 9 hours. I have a beautiful wife who loves me, I have a roof over my head, and I live in a country that in spite of it's problems is a beacon of freedom and security in a storm tossed world. Most importantly, however, I have a knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ. How much more blessed can any one individual be?

I am sure Michelle will post some pictures of the trip so I will leave that to her. But I am sure that she won't mention how we ended up over 50 miles off course. She missed the exit to I-74 in Indianapolis (I was reading) and continued on I-70 until we hit the Illinois state line at which time she said, "Jason, I think we are on the wrong road." Sure enough, we were on our way to St. Louis. Luckily, she caught it soon enough that we were able to take some back roads until we hit I -57 into Champaign. The funny thing was that as we were on those back roads, we passed a church with a sign out front that said, "Lost? we can help." We laughed and Michelle continued to apologize (it really wasn't that big of a deal). Literally two minutes later, we crossed the Embarras (yes, it only has one S) river, causing Michelle to start laughing all over again. We finally made it home at about 5:30 pm. As fun as it was seeing everybody, it is nice to be home.

The purple shirt

This morning I saw Scott wearing the same shirt that he wears over and over. It' s a blue Disney/Pampered Chef shirt from when we went to Disney World 5 years ago. It has a great big star on the front and says, "When you Wish"

He loves this shirt and since every person in the family had one when we went to Disney we have all sizes, so it seems he never grows out of it. When really he just keeps going to the next bigger one, when his wears out.

So this morning I pull out this new shirt I bought him and called him over to change into it. He puts it on and says, "Aww a purple shirt, you gotta be kidding me, I can't wear that in front of the girls."

I think it's really nice. I told him it's a boy's shirt and told him it looks good on him. Then I said to him, "Do you have a girlfriend." He exclaimed happily, "Of coarse, cause I'm 7 and it's time for that."

Here is a recent picture I took of him after his choir concert.
He just joined Show Choir at his middle school. I'm really proud of him.

random stuff

I can't believe it is November already and in just two weeks I get to see my parents!!!!!! Yahoo and have Turkey too. I love Thanksgiving. And we will get to see Adrianne and her family and Chelsey and her family. That is just too awesome. Lots of relatives all in the same weekend.

Besides all that, Pampered Chef has picked up a bit and for that I'm grateful. I have been having lots of parties, like 2 a week and it keeps me running.

Almost every piece of Halloween candy is gone in our house so I will have that temptation gone till next year. Somehow I managed to gain 2 pounds last week. It must be the dang Halloween candy because I'm still teaching 10-12 classes a week consisting of Step aerobics (Body Step), weight lifting (Body Pump), Body Sculpt (an all over body toning class), Water aerobics and of coarse my favorite ZUMBA. If you still have not been to a zumba class then you are missing out big time. Go to http://www.zumba.com/ now and go to the class locator and find a class in your area and just take it already.

Jason's birthday is tomorrow November 10th. He will be 39!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ha Ha Jason, you are closer to 40 than me.

Hawkeyes lost their first game so they are 9 and 1. Sad about that, but they Will beat OHIO STATE this coming weekend and then that means still up for the Rose bowl!! So Dad when the game is on expect a call every single time Hawkeyes score and smash those Buckeyes into tiny little buckeye pieces.

I have a dentist appointment on November 18th at 4p.m. and I'm noting that since I seem to forget everything when it comes to doctor or dentist appointments. With all this Halloween candy I've been consuming I wouldn't be surprised if I have a cavity.

Brenden started show choir at his Middle school. So glad for him, he seems super excited about that. I know he will do well.

Alyssa is playing Flute in the band and doing extremely well, she loves to practice. This can't be normal, and if it seems like I'm complaining, I'm not because she gets over 4 hours of practice a week, she loves her flute. If she keeps this up she will be fabulous.

My sister Jan started her very own blog this past week. You will have to check it out.
http://janandwarren.blogspot.com

and definately read the post about their honeymoon. I laughed out loud!

Ok I have at least 5 errands that I can think of and a house to clean so I'm off for now.

Halloween 2009

At Jason's work they all carved pumpkins and here is one his co-worker did. As much as people claim to not like Michael Jackson, I think his music is awesome, not him so much, but the music is SUPER GREAT!! Probably because I was 12 when the album Thriller came out and I received that record from my Dad. It was my first introduction to pop music and I danced to it often. Anyway, this first pumpkin is of Michael Jackson and I think it's pretty fabulous. Jason brought it home and put it on our porch and we received literally hundreds of compliments. Bummer I had to tell people that I'm not that talented.

On the left is Scott's pumpkin on the right is Alyssa's pumpkin. Not sure why she wanted all the toothpicks in it, but she did. Then on the far right is Jared's pumpkin. He calls it Frankenstein.

Below is Jason's Pumpkin. As much as he claims to not like Halloween or anything connected to it, he carved his own pumpkin on his own. He calls it Jack. For Trunk-r-treat at our church Alyssa brought her neighbor friend named Gabby.

Scott in his Dracula costume.

Alyssa in her Miss Iowa costume. I couldn't find a really cute dress in her size, so we went to a thrift store and found this vintage dress that she loved, it was a size 3/4 women's dress and then I shortened it by over 12 inches. That took a while, but with all that extra material I cut off the bottom of the dress I was able to make a shawl for her shoulders.
I am glad Halloween is over, to me it's a stressful holiday. Thank goodness I only had 2 to dress up this year instead of all 6.

Gotta love Halloween!

A few of the children went out this year to trick or treat. None of my children like Almond Joy candy bars. However, I love them and they all gave me their Almond Joy candy!!! Yahoo.

The other night it was our Trunk-r-Treat at church. There was a chili cookoff. I had signed up to bring chili and got a call that morning to remind me. I was so busy Wednesday with a Pampered Chef fundraiser and getting Alyssa's Halloween costume finished so the chili was an afterthought. Around 3p.m. I started getting the chili together. I threw in it whatever I could find, didn't follow a recipe. There was everything from hot sauce, onions, hamburger, all kinds of beans, tomato soup, spices and much more and so it was surprising to me that I tied for first place.

Lastly the Iowa Hawkeyes won their game again today. Now we are 9 and 0!! Yahoo. Go Hawks!

It's still raining. It has been a steady rain for the past 36 hours and I am already tired of the gloom. The leaves outside are beautiful but the wind and rain are ripping them off the trees before we get a chance to enjoy them. The view of the trees out my office window is unbelievable. It looks like a Bob Ross painting. Bright oranges, reds, and yellows, with the occasional green pine tree mixed in. Now if we could only get some sun. I am still holding out a little bit of hope for an Indian Summer but it is looking less and less likely as the days go by with continued nastiness.

Every year, the high school puts on a concert in the auditorium called Sounds of the Stadium. It is my least favorite concert to go to because it is so loud. The students all put on their band uniforms and perform their marching program in a concert setting. Marching band music is not meant to be played indoors. Every year, they do have a piece they play just for that concert called the stripper. It sounds like something out the Full Monty. They get about 10 boys - usually upperclassmen - to perform a little strip tease. It's all a huge joke with the crowd going wild as the boys remove their uniforms piece by piece down to their tee-shirts and shorts (not undershorts) underneath. Caleb was one of the strippers again this year and did such a convincing job that I got an email from a former co-worker telling me that he has a future as a chippendale dancer. That prospect doesn't excite me but at least she enjoyed the dance.

Our lives pretty much revolve around concerts and youth activities. As Mom and Dad can attest to, it gets a little exhausting. Last night we actually had a break. It is amazing how nice it is to come home from work and realize that you don't have anywhere to go or anything in particular to do.

Concert

Concert season has officially started. Usually I drag my feet and dred going (at least on the inside). Last night was West High School's Fall Chorale Concert. There are five choirs at West in addition to the two show choirs. The show choirs didn't perform but the others were great. Caleb played percussion for one of the Treble choir's songs - he's a pretty good drummer. I wouldn't tell him to his face (gotta keep him humble) but he is a much better percussionist than I ever was. Last year he was a member of the Bass choir but this year he is in the Concert Choir. They sing all of their songs a capella. I was very impressed that they could sing in a mixed formation and do such an incredible job so early in the year. Their last number was "Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho" and although I have heard this piece done many times, these guys hit it dead on. Their diction was nearly perfect, their dynamics were good, and their pitch was right on - particularly the men's parts. I wish you all could have been here to have heard it. All these years of going to ear-wrenching concerts is finally paying off. Now if I can make it through Alyssa's first ever band concert and Brenden's first ever choir concert next week I'll have it made.

I added a couple pictures that I took at the concert last night. Can you find Caleb in his Choir?

The 2nd picture is Caleb with Bailey his girlfriend. Can you see Daniel's head inbetween them in the background. I took 5 pictures and there was another sibling in every single one so I gave up. Actually it's funny to me.

So much to say

First, It's been a long time since I've posted pictures and I realized this today and decided that it's due time you all were updated. So here it is my post and it's gonnna be long so get some popcorn.
Back in August we celebrated Brenden's birthday. He loves Ghost Busters and I found this shirt. He wears it all the time.

First Day of School for everyone. Daniel and Caleb. Daniel was not happy about being a Freshman, but now that the school year is over a month over he is doing well and seems to enjoy it. The pictures of those two were fuzzy and I'm not sure why. Could be I had the camera on a weird setting or something.

Jared and Brenden both in Middle School.

Funny pictures of Scott and Alyssa. They are both in Elementary School. Alyssa is in 5th grade and Scott is in 2nd grade.

Brenden went out for football this year. He is #14

Lastly, my Aunt Donna sent me this gorgeous quilt for our bed.
I absolutely love it. I saw it when I went to Ohio in May and told her if she ever wanted to make another quilt I'd pay her to make this exact one. I thought it was fabulous. Next thing I know she mailed it to me. This truly was a surprise and I'm so grateful for this. It looks so great in our room and is the exact colors that I love.

The reinvention of conservatism

I am largely disillusioned with politics. Both by the politicians themselves as well as many of the ideas they espouse. Party lines are more blurry now then they ever have been in the past. I am not sure if Republicans are simply cheap Democrats (that is a Rick Santorum phrase, not mine) or if Democrats are expensive Republicans. Either way, it seems that it all comes down to money, not right and wrong. Although I can't stand the self-righteous intolerance of the far right, I equally cannot stomach the whatever-feels-good attitude of the left. I do, however, find myself much more attracted to the idea of the importance of personal responsiblity and personal accountablity that is predominatly preached by conservatives. Liberals seem to think that I am too dumb to take care of myself and therefore need to be watched over by the government. However, this seems to an up and coming idea among some conservatives as well.

I just watched a 30 minute talk given by Rick Santorum at the University of Dubuque last week. He spoke as a guest of the American Future Fund. It was a good talk that dealt with the fundamental problems underlying the dogma of both parties. One of the points he makes is that if healthcare reform passes, we will experience a permanant change in the idea of America. Already the government owns GM and parts of the financial industry. When it gets its hands on healthcare (more than it already has, that is), we will be on a heading towards an iceburg that we can't change. Why not uncouple health insurance from employment like auto or life insurance? That way issues of portablity and pre-existing conditions and eventually price, will be non-issues or in terms of price, at least manageable.

Every year, the University sends me a contract letter telling me how much I will be making in the coming year. I have great benefits - about $18,000 a year worth. I have a great healthcare plan but my issue with this is why not pay me that extra $18,000 a year and allow me to choose the coverage I feel is necessary? I would at least like the option to make that choice. Herein lies the fundamental problems with both parties. Republicans and Democrats simply assume that I am unable to look after myself and therefore perpetuate this ongoing problem. Any "fix" of the healthcare system will only be a band aid unless we focus on our responsibilty to care for ourselves and design a fix that supports personal accountablity. I, for one, am tired of paying for the government to bail out big corporations and lazy individuals with no sense of responsibity. Ronald Reagan once said, "Government is like a baby: An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other." The government belongs to us. We need to curb its appetite.

Bitter sweet

Nebraska lost, Florida State won. That's the bitter part. Iowa won, USC lost. That's the sweet part. Besides the football, it was a busy weekend. In an effort to prepare a garden for next year, I have been slowly cutting down a couple of trees. There are actually three trees in my back yard that need to come down so that I can get enough sunlight to grow anything but moss. Two of the trees are on the fence line, one of which hangs over my neighbor's roof. Both of those trees are between 20-30 feet so they aren't too much of a challenge other than the fact that I don't want to drop anything on my neighbor's property. The real problem is that I don't own a chain saw. So, I became good friends with some rope and my bow saw. I started the project two weeks ago and cut down as much of the tree hanging over my neighbor's house as I dared - there is only so high a guy my size (and age) should be climbing. This last Saturday, after sawing away on the other tree at my fence line, Michelle came out saw what I was doing, shook her head, and went back inside. A minute or two later she came back out and told me she had made a couple of calls and had found a chainsaw I could borrow. By 7 pm, I had gotten the entire tree down without dropping a single crabapple into my neighbor's yard. Now I only have one and a half trees to go. I just need larger diameter rope, a taller ladder, and a much bigger saw.

Happy anniversary of your 29th birthday - again...

It was on this day, all those many years ago, the Michelle decided to grace the world with her presence. I am glad she did.

Happy birthday!! Now was it McDonald's or Wendy's that you wanted to go to tonight?

I love you!

Yum

I just had a tomato sandwich for lunch and it was the best thing ever.

If you've never had one, you are truly missing out big time.

Our hometeacher came over on Sunday and brought us some garden tomatoes (the best kind)

Today I toasted some bread, spread it with light mayonaise then sliced one of those fat juicy garden tomatoes and put slices of it all over the bread.

Then I ate it all!!!!

Super awesome.

Early Morning Seminary

Another school year, another early morning seminary year. This year we have two boys in High school and boy were they ever grumpy this morning. It was so hard to get them up. Took almost 15 minutes. I started out by just softly whispering, "Time to get up boys!" Then turned their light on, then did a load of laundry, then walked in there and talked louder and told them how they were wasting "getting ready minutes" Then I talked louder and tickeled their feet.

After Caleb had showered and was somewhat of a better mood, or so I thought he says, "Why didn't you wake me up at 5:40a.m.?" I told him I did and it took him a while to get up and that I had gone in his room three times before tickling his feet. He was mad that it was 6:11a.m. and he hadn't eaten anything yet and we have to leave by 6:20a.m. so he can get there in time.

I just continued making pancakes and mixing up the orange juice so they would both have a nice breakfast. I tried to ignore the fighting going on between them.

Caleb then says, "Why did you wash my white t-shirt?"

I told him that it was gross and on the floor of his room and I thought I'd be nice and give him fresh clothes.

Sometimes you wonder why you even try to be a nice parent because the lack of respect and the fighting just continues.

While in the van on the way to seminary the fighting between Caleb and Daniel continued. Caleb couldn't take the mouth of Daniel anymore and took his front seat, loosened it and smashed it backwards into Daniel's body, then Daniel said words that are less than nice to Caleb that I seriously can't write on this blog, then the punching started. This is all while I'm trying to drive just 3 miles to seminary.

Seriously I don't deserve this kind of contention. Glad tomorrow is Jason's day to get up with the boys. I will be teaching an aerobics class at 5:15a.m. so I get to escape.

Caleb and his I-pod cake

As you all know by now Caleb turned 16. He wanted an I-pod cake. Heather Gibbons my friend from church did a fabulous job once again making another cake for our family. This I-pod has every detail on it, down to the earbuds and everything you see is edible. So cool. Caleb loved it.

Caleb and his girlfriend Bailey before their date on Friday.

No way is this happening.

We were informed today by Caleb that he has a date tomorrow (his 16th birthday). How is this possible? I was just teaching him how to throw a ball, to ride a bike, to mow the lawn, etc... Now, some girl thinks she can sink her cootie-ridden claws into my little boy. I know that it is inevitable but can't it wait for just a few more years? Three more years and Caleb will be on a mission and in 12 years we will be empty nesters. I am a little saddened by this but again, it is going to happen whether I want it to or not. Don't forget to create good memories. I have all too frequently been buried in the day to day stresses of raising 6 children and have not spent enough time enjoying them. It's time to change that.

School Starts in 8 days

And we aren't counting. Ok, yes we are.

Summer seemed to fly by, but because of that School is almost back in session. Caleb and Daniel had professional haircuts today since my haircuts are less than desirable from everyone that views them.

Although i feel like I do a really good job on hair since I haven't had any "formal training" and I don't have sharp scissors, which do help a lot.

Anyway, so to make Caleb and Daniel's high school pictures look fabulous I took them to a real place to get their hair done. They both look great. I was hardly home when they bolted to go play with friends, so I haven't had a chance to take a picture of either of them yet.

Tomorrow I will get the two registered at High School. Can't believe it.

Then next Monday Jared and Brenden get registerd at Middle School
and on the same day Scott and Alyssa get registered at Elementary school.

Lots of paperwork to fill out for all involved, so I can't stay on here. So much to get ready for, but I will post pictures soon of everyone's new "professional" haircuts and their sporty backpacks on their first days of school!!!

Ouch

Yesterday I was sweeping up a mess in the kitchen. I bent down to use the dustpan and didn't realize that the cupboard was open above me. I stood up and slammed my head into it. It hurt so bad I just sat there for a minute. I felt like I was going to pass out. I got an ice pack then layed down.

After a little while I taught Body Pump then worked at HyVee till late last night. I could feel my head, but it wasn't bad and I never took any medicine so I figured I was fine.

This morning there is a bump and it hurts so bad. It is throbbing. I'm going back to bed since I hurt so bad, hope my children don't eat everything in sight.

18.5 Hours

At 11:45 P.M. Central Time Jason walked through our front door.

He made the drive home from Utah in exactly 18.5 Hours.

I missed all my boys a lot!!

Surprise in a Box!

Update on the pillow. The second box from Fed Ex arrived from the hotel I stayed at. I never got my pillow back, but I was sent the 2nd feather pillow that they found at the hotel that they thought was mine. I ended up washing both pillows with their accompanying cases and now they are my new pillows. I figured I couldn't waste them, something had to take the place of the lost "Squish"

This summer has flown by, it seems like all of July we didn't have "JULY Weather" Now don't get me wrong, I don't miss the humidity, but I did miss the hot weather. We had 60's most of the month and even though having the air conditioner off was super nice, not being able to take the children swimming was a real bummer.

Now it's August and the children will start school in two weeks. Where did the time go? This year the elementary schools have decided to charge fees. So now I'll have fees for all the schools. I feel that since you pay your taxes to send your children to public school that you shouldn't have fees to go with that. It will be over $600 in school fees for us this year and that's just an estimate. I'm not sure how we will swing all that. Then, Caleb has All-State camp this week, that's for Choir and then Band Camp next week. Both of those programs need money as well. Maybe I'll need a 5th part time job?????????? Donations accepted at our home anytime. :) Feel free to send Large bills. :) :)

Caleb turns 16 in just over a week. I can't believe it. This means dating and driving and all that comes with age 16. In our family we don't let the children date until they are 16. Since that is drawing near, Caleb has been counting down the days till his first date. He is very excited. I told him he should date his sister for his first date (I was kidding, he thought I was serious and he said , "Oh No Way MOM!"

Two weeks after Caleb's birthday will be Brenden's birthday, he will be 12. This means little Brenden passing the Sacrament at church. I can't believe I'll have 4 boys passing the Sacrament.

I'm still playing piano in Primary at Church. It's amazing what you learn in Primary. However, I do miss Relief Society.

Jason is still in Utah. I miss him greatly. It will be so nice to have him home again. Mainly because we didn't get to finish celebrating our anniversary. It was actually a very disappointing anniversary since he had to leave. I just hope this trip doesn't set us back financially. I'm worried with all the birthdays and school fees. Children sure do cost a lot to raise.

Meanwhile Alyssa has been reading like crazy. She read the 2nd Twilight book in less than a week. She is so into that series. However I had to put a halt on her reading since I heard that the 3rd book has less than desirable things in it that I should read first before letting her read it. So I'm working on reading the 3rd book to see what the heck is in there.

Today the plans are to go to the Devonian Fossil Gorge in Iowa City/Coralville area. It's a great FREE activity to go do. Then we are off to the beach at Lake McBride in Northern Coralville for a swim.

gotta love consignment stores!

Last week Alyssa, Scott and I were out shopping for new shoes for Scott. We found this fun consignment store called Kid Works. Scott got his new shoes and we also found these cute shoes for Alyssa. So funny that she absolutely loved the PINK sparkle shoes and then we found a darling dress to go with them. Everything was half price so we walked out with 4 pairs of shoes (two for Scott, two for Alyssa) a shirt and dress all for $25

Alyssa is 10

It is birthday time in the house once again. Alyssa turned 10 yesterday - that's 2 hands old. Not much compared to my 7 hands, 3 fingers but she is getting old none the less. We let her have a birthday party/sleepover with a group of friends on Friday. Seven 10-year-old girls in one house are more than enough. Here are a few pictures.

Girls, girls, girls.

Michelle's cake decorating skills have improved, haven't they?

Actually, we were supporting the local economy by buying this cake from a couple of women at church who are starting a business. Everything you see is edible. The cake itself was delicious. Click on the link Sugar Mammas on the right to see what other cakes they have created.

Alyssa loves jewelry. Thankfully, she doesn't care where they are purchased or how much it costs.

What?

What do you consider a productive week?

Is it when you get a bunch of laundry done? Is it when you actually do everything on your to-do list? Is it when you finally take the children swimming after they've been begging for a week? Is it when your room is clean and you can actually tell your children to clean their room because you have shown the example finally? Is it when you finish the book you are reading? Is it when you meet a goal you've been working on?

Sometimes I feel like life is going too fast and too crazy. Is it that I'm old now? How old is old? A horse is old at 20, A dog is old at 10, yet a fly is old at 2 days. My children are growing up way too fast. Alyssa will be 10 by the end of week and Caleb will be 16 in just 4 weeks. I remember holding their newborn bodies and hoping those moments would last forever.

Somedays I just need to go fast like today when Caleb, Daniel, Jared and Brenden were all fighting. They fought so bad today that everyone ended up in their rooms with doors shut so no one could talk to eachother. Now they are all sleeping and the house is quiet and peaceful so as I reflect on this day I ask myself, did I handle it well?

Somedays I like to sit and just enjoy and watch the children play. But watching is all I really like to do. Parenting not so much. It can be so hard and unrewarding. Where's the love? When do you feel like you've done a good job? When do you stop worrying? When do you stop crying?

Case of Missing Pillow Part 2

So this morning I wake up to the following e-mail:

Good morning Michelle,

I am sorry to get back to you today and not yesterday, but housekeeping informed me after I was told we had the pillow, there are no pillows with any flower patterns on the pillow case. We have 1 feather pillow in housekeeping with a blue pillow case. I do apologize for all of the miscommunications and I am very sorry for someone telling you we had your pillow when for some reason they do not. I do not know if they took off the flower pillow case and we actually do have your pillow. But again I am very sorry to inform you I did not send out a pillow. You can disregard the tracking number I gave you.

Since you received the wrong pillow the 1st time and you were charged, please email me your credit card bill with the FedEx bill and I will reverse that charge immediately for you.

Sorry Bob

The case of the missing feather pillow.

It all started Saturday night at the Wyndham O'hare airport hotel. Two girls from Utah that Susan and I roomed with at our Pampered Chef conference called and said that their flight had been bumped and they were staying an extra night in Chicago and they were at the Wyndham hotel and would we want to join them?

So Susan and I thought it would be fun to stay yet another night in Chicago and this time for FREE!

When we arrived to their hotel I brought just an outfit inside along with my favorite pillow. This pillow is my small feather pillow that I've had at least as long as 25 years, maybe more. I always have to have it to sleep. It even has a name, "Squish"

On Sunday morning, bright and early we left for home. I left my pillow there at the hotel. I didn't realize this until it was much too late to return. I realized it when I was unpacking later in the day.

I called the hotel and they said they'd be happy to mail it to me by Fed Ex ground if I paid for it. So I proceeded to give them my financial information and got off the phone.

This morning a large box arrived. It was from Fed Ex. Inside was a pillow that was NOT mine.

Bummer. So I called the hotel again. This time I talked to Bob, who said he does have a pillow that matches the description and he will mail it to me, this time on his dime.

Hopefully in a few days I will finally have MY beloved pillow and be able to sleep again!!

Thanks Lindsey

Jason was googling some names in the family recently, when this came up.

I think it's cool and we didn't even know you did this Lindsey.

Scroll down to find Army Capt. Hans Lokodi

What a neat thing, wish we would have heard it on TV when it aired, but since we don't watch the news much, that's how we missed it. So cool!

Our week in Iowa

I got a 30 minute phone call from Caleb last night. Philmont was a success. He had a great time but he said it was the hardest thing he has ever done in his life. I can't wait for him to come home and show us the pictures. I am so glad that he is safe.

Daniel has also been away on High Adventure this week. They went canoeing on the Upper Iowa River and went fishing. I will bet Dan is in 7th heaven. He comes home tonight and will be going straight into the shower.

On top of all of this, Michelle is in Chicago this weekend for a conference. It's just me and the crew. Unfortunately, Michelle made a couple of meals before she left (apparently she forgot that I am a pretty darn good chef). This means that I don't have an excuse to order pizza. Darn it!

Since Michelle is gone, I get (?) to sub her classes at the gym. This means that I taught Zumba this morning. It was a great class if only for the comic relief of watching a 38 year old man trying to shake it. It must have worked though, I almost got a marriage proposal on the spot (just kidding, Michelle).

Caleb is off to Philmont Scout Ranch

Yesterday Caleb left for Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. I managed to somehow get some pictures of him. He was being super silly in the picture on the left. Then the picture on the right was taken in the car by surprise, but I actually got a smile!I cried when he left. This is the longest I will have ever been away from him. I hope he has a fabulous time and stays safe and happy!
In 15 days I'll see him again!

The #1 most talked about subject in the world

I knew it was too good to last but I was hoping for a little more anyway. I am talking about spring. Somebody went and flipped the humidity switch on Wednesday. We lasted two days until I caved and turned the air conditioner on. Although I don't usually pay attention to the actual percent humidity, I do have my own simple hygrometer. There is an asphalt bike path that I take through the park on my way to work. When it rains in the early morning, leaving the pathway wet, the time it takes the pathway to dry out is directly proportional to the humidity. For example, it rained before dawn yesterday and the path was still wet when I rode home yesterday at 4:45 in spite of the fact that it hadn't rained all day. Obviously I am not taking wind or sunlight into account here but still, it was humid yesterday. More of the same for the next 3 and a half months.

Economy woes

It's now been a year since the flood. As I look out my window, I can see cars driving over a bridge that was closed a year ago. Most of the flood damage has been fixed but there are still businesses that have remained closed. The University took a pretty big hit last year also. Several buildings are still closed. One of them, Hancher Auditorium, is going to be rebuilt elsewhere. The problem is that there is no money to rebuild anything. The State Board of Regents projects a shortfall of over 130 million dollars for next year. That means job cuts. Two weeks ago, Iowa City was named as the city with the lowest unemployment rate in the nation. Two days after the government released those data, the University announced that it was going to be cutting 200 jobs. At first the cuts were going to be kept within the hospital but now they will be shared by the College of Medicine (my employer). The first two job cuts have already been announced. Two senior nursing administrators have been laid off. A lot of the positions here at the hospital are covered by two unions which will make it nearly impossible for any of the nurses or support staff (clerks, maintainance, etc...) to lose their jobs. However, researchers are not covered under any union contract. I am not sure whether to be worried or not. I probably shouldn't be since I am paid out of grants and not the University's general fund but you can never be sure what administrators are thinking. Their decisions don't always make a lot of long term sense. A lot of the upper-mid level administrators treat their positions as stepping stones to bigger and better things. This means that they generally aren't here for the long term and as such they make decisions that look good (i.e. saving money) in the short term. They want to be able to point to a reduction in costs while department X was under their purview. Unfortunately, while they move on to their supposed bigger and better thing, the rest of us are left here to clean up the mess they caused. I really hope our current batch of administrators have the foresight to do things the right way.

On the bright side, it looks like we just got the NIH grant we applied for a couple of months ago. That will give us 5 years of financial stability in the lab. The fact that we have money in the lab is very comforting and provides us all with a little more security. The University will probably be a little more hesitant to lay off employees that are bringing in significant amounts of money.

There's another teen in the house.

Here are a couple of pictures from last night's festivities.

Nothing like a little candy to soothe the beast.

He still loves legos. These boys of mine can really build. They will spend hours in their room building things that Frank Lloyd Wright only dreamed of.

We always thought Brenden had more than air between his ears but maybe not, his head looks translucent.

One of those weeks

This past week was the start of summer vacation and all the crazy schedules that go with that. There were a lot of appointments this last week and I thought I made it to all of them, then realized I missed Brenden's dental appointment, so I get to reschedule that for this week.

Caleb goes to Philmont in just 2 weeks in New Mexico and he is super excited about that. He saved up $900 to go to that. I am so proud of him for his dedication in saving so he could attend such an awesome event. We bought him boots last week so he could start breaking them in for Philmont. He wears them everywhere. He has size 15 feet so boots were hard to come by. The price to put that boy in shoes is extrodinary. If he gets one size bigger we will have to special order everything for his feet. Caleb is still working at HyVee and does well there.

Daniel is looking for a job since he is now 14. He would rather fish all summer, but that's not going to happen, he needs to start saving money for his mission.

Jared will turn 13 tomorrow and we will officially have 3 teenagers in the house. Can't believe that, it makes me feel so old.

Brenden is finally ungrounded and started fishing with his brothers this week. He is loving it and tells me everyday of how many fish he catches.

Since the children are home and I still teach aerobics during the day I get to bring them with me to my classes. Alyssa and Scott love this because they love the daycare at North Dodge Athletic Club. That daycare was well thought out and has two giant rooms with a seperate attached bathroom. If you are looking for a gym with a great daycare, seriously consider North Dodge, you will be happy.

I taught 9 classes this week and for once I don't feel tired. However my abs really hurt today so I must have worked my class extra hard in Body Sculpt yesterday. I think I'm getting used to teaching 2 classes a day and I love it. Athough the down side of this is I am pretty sure I have an ankle injury. I had an x-ray last week that showed nothing wrong, but the swelling in my ankle continues, so the doctor suggested an MRI. That was done on Friday and I find out tomorrow what is really going on in there. I feel great when teaching, but when laying down with the foot up it throbs. Makes no sense at all.

The Sports Medicine doctor mentioned that she thinks I have some cartilage missing or torn which would cause these problems, she called it something and I forgot what she said. She said if my condition in the ankle is what she thinks it is then I will have to have surgery which would take me out of teaching for 6-8 weeks. However in the next breath she mentioned that some people with the injury she thinks I have go on forever and do nothing about it. So it depends on my pain threshold.

Jason did a 25 mile bike ride yesterday to train for his triatholon coming up in September.

Yesterday I redeemed my Mother's day gift which was a day at the spa. The local beauty college had an awesome "Day of Beauty" thing which was only $40 and included a pedicure, manicure, facial, hair cut and style. The man named Beto who did all the services at the beauty college needed an updo as one of his requirements to graduate so I walked out of there yesterday with this gorgeous updo. So cool. I took pictures that I'll post another time.

This week has lots of fun things planned from library trips to swimming. Yay for summer!!!!

Riding in Style

There are some things I just let go and some things I think about and say nothing, but seriously, get this:

My son Brenden who is in 6th grade has a friend named Jared also in 6th grade.

Today being the last day of school Jared's Mom is throwing a 6th grade party for her son and he was able to invite a few boys.

Last night this Mom calls and says that Brenden will be picked up in a Limousine after school to get to the party.

Seriously.

So at 2:25p.m. right on schedule, here pulls up the limousine to get Brenden. A very large extended hummer limousine. Holy crap, how much did that cost and for a bunch of 10 and 11 year old boys. I don't see why this had to be such a big deal.

It's only a 6th grade graduation party.

What will the High School graduation party be like?

Birds get a bad rap. I know that they tend to irritate me at 4 am when I have left my bedroom window open. Do you know how loud a Cardinal, a Grackle, and a Robin can be right outside your window? The only thing more irritating is the stupid rabbits that have been eating my roses, crocuses, and tulips. I am seriously considering buying a pellet gun. Anyway, back to birds. Their rap is somewhat deserved. They aren't too bright sometimes (bird brains). We had a sparrow fly though the open door of our biology class in high school. Realizing it was inside, it turned around and repeatedly flew into the large, picture window right next to the open door until it killed itself. They are also devious. We have some pigeons that live on top of my building. The other day, I was talking to a friend of mine. I was facing the huge, plate glass windows that are all along one side of the building (they would be jumping windows if you could open them), when I noticed a pigeon hightailing it directly toward me. At the last minute, he pulled up and emptied his bowels all over the window. I am sure he landed and rolled with laughter at the sight of me reflexively ducking. He had good aim. If there hadn't been a window there, my co-worker's back and head would have been riddled with pigeon pooh.

On the other hand, I think birds are a bit smarter than we think. They are the only adult animal other than primates that I have ever seen play. A number of years ago, I watched an adult Bald Eagle fly slowly to edge of a bluff and suddenly catch an updraft that sent him straight up about 20 feet. He wheeled over and did it again and again. It was facinating to watch. What a rush that must have been.

There really is no point to this post. I am just killing a few spare minutes.

Caleb's Solo

Here is Caleb's solo video, it took forever to download, not sure why, but it is a long video of 5 1/2 minutes. Only watch the first 2.25 minutes that is his solo.

I'm definately computer challenged because I tried to edit it shorter all day and I spent over 4 hours trying to get this thing even on here. Caleb came home and found it in seconds. However the processing to get it to post took over an hour. Does every video take this long? If so, this may be the last one you see ever, sorry.

lots of stuff

We had a very busy last week. Here are some of the highlights.

Scott had his ears checked again and still has fluid hanging out in them so he got a tube put in one ear that had the most fluid, and the Dr. said that he will probably need another tube in the other ear. Dr. Hansen which is Jason's boss did the surgery right in his office. He told Scott to sit very still and promised him ice cream. Scott did great and as a result got ice cream. Scott told me that it was the largest chocolate ice cream he's ever had in his life. So glad he can hear again out of one ear at least. I'm grateful that we know Dr. Hansen personally because this kind of service was wonderful. Normally you'd have to wait several weeks just to be seen in the Otolarengology department and then another several weeks to get the surgery scheduled. He saved us tons of time and money, and I'm so happy that he cares about our family to do this for us.

I had a tooth worked on. Basically a tooth with three different fillings in the tooth had to be replaced because not only was it was super old but more decay was happening around the fillings. I had it replaced and she said that if it goes bad then next time I'll need a crown. Fun for me. It is super sensitive right now.

Jason got to go on a couple long bike rides last week, one by himself and one 10 miler with Daniel. Daniel needed to finish up his biking merit badge so this was the last thing to do for that.

Caleb had a choir concert that was absolutely fabulous. He had a solo which I recorded on our mini video camera, but not sure how to get it off the camera onto the computer then into a post. I'm struggling with that technology. You will have to hear this boy sing. I was super surprised by how awesome he sounded and basically had to be held down at the end of the song because I wanted to shout "That's my boy!" but refrained from that embarrassment. He was so awesome. Oh my! Wow! I still can't believe it.

Alyssa is starting to read large books and really enjoying them. She is reading two books at once, both Harry Potter and Twilight. After each chapter of Twilight she comes to me and says, "Mom you just have to read this book, it's sooooooooo good." Guess I'll have to.

Brenden is working on a huge China packet for his Social Studies class. Almost finished the entire thing this long weekend. I'm proud of him for sticking with it, it looks long, boring and a pain to do. Can you tell I wasn't ever into school work?

Jared is starting to really enjoy fishing. He bought a fishing pole with his allowance and ever since has gone almost daily to our many ponds and creeks around here to catch fish. Yesterday he spend a good portion of the day digging in our garden area for worms. Both Jared and Daniel were full of mud when they finished. Most of it they kept outside.

That's it for last week. I will try and figure out the video thing and get that posted.

Today's visitor

I was doubtful he would visit, but finally at around 1p.m. today we got a call that he was on his way over.

Who?

The Sears Man.

I was so glad to see him. Even happier with him when he actually fixed the dryer.

I have completed 6 loads of laundry since then and have about 6-10 more. Fun!!!

Being a dad

As I have been reading through my sibling's blogs lately, I have been reliving my days as a parent with young children. Part of me misses those days but a large part of me does not. They were hard. Excrusiatingly hard sometimes. Michelle and I chose to have a large family (by today's standards) and are very grateful for the 6 children we have but it has been very challenging at times.
Perhaps the hardest time for me as a father was the month of August, 1997. Michelle was pregnant with Brenden (our fourth child in as many years) and on forced bed rest in the hospital. I was a single parent trying to work, keep the apartment clean, the boys fed, church assignments fulfilled, etc... I was extremely tired and stressed out. One night, I was taking the boys to go see Michelle at the hospital and our car died on I-15. Here I was, on the freeway with no transportation and three boys ages 4, 2, and 1 looking up at me wondering what was going on. Michelle had been in the hospital for three weeks and I was as wrung out as I had ever been. I remember the feeling of anger and hopelessness that came over me. It was as close as I have ever gotten to shaking my fist at heaven. I would like to say a miracle happened and the car started and we got back on our way but that is not what happened. The Lord rarely works that way. Instead, he works through the goodness of other people. A man stopped and helped me push the car to the nearest off ramp where I was able to put the car in neutral and coast about a 3/4 a mile to find a place to park the car. I then got the boys out and we walked the rest of the way to the hospital. The boys were overjoyed to see Michelle, I was just happy to sit down. My point in all of this is that life is hard and always will be. We will be tried and tested. Our job is to cheerfully endure each trial (although I was not cheerfully enduring that one) that we may prove ourselves to God. Each trial eventually ends and how we feel about ourselves afterwards is largely dependant on how we weathered the storm. Back to my siblings. As I read their blogs, I am reminded of various trials as a parent I have experienced. Sometimes I laugh at their exasperation (that would be the mean, I-told-you-so part of my personality that I try to keep under wraps) but most times I fully empathize. Now, with teenagers, I am faced with a whole new set of trials that often times make me wish I was back with three little boys in a broken down car on the freeway. At least then they believed that I could do no wrong. Now they know better. Some day they will understand how much I love them and that being a dad is my favorite thing in the world.

Better get used to hanging laundry

So the Sears man finally shows up today to "fix" the dryer. Who am I kidding? He didn't fix anything. Here we are back to last January 2008. Remember when I called to have them come out and fix the dryer then? They didn't have the part, so they ordered it, then I had to wait for them to come back and put the part in. A grand total of 3 weeks of waiting for my dryer to be fixed.

Here we are again, Week 1. Repair man shows up and decides that he can't fix it. Some belt is broken and of course he doesn't have the right belt so he has to order it. It might be here by Saturday (he says) and after the part is here, we have to call back and re-schedule him to come back on the first available business day after that. So it might be next Thursday if we are lucky.

In our home with 8 people wearing clothes, 2 people working out on a regular basis and 6 children playing outside getting all dirty and such, we go through at least a load a day. I seriously can't keep up with this when I have to hang it in the basement and it takes so long to dry. Thank heavens Jason is such a help.

What upsets me the most about all this is that this dryer is less than 3 years old. It's a Kenmore Super Capacity front loading dryer. I was talked into buying it because our Maytag, Whirlpool, and Amana appliances have been less than faithful. Several people recommended a Kenmore Dryer so we thought we would give it a try. Well there you have it, it's a piece of crap too. DON'T BUY KENMORE UNLESS YOU WANT A LEMON, this is our 3rd repair in less than 3 years.

Also on the list of Don't Buy (even if it's a good deal):
Maytag front loading washing machine
Maytag or Whirlpool Dishwasher
Amana Microwave
Whirlpool side by side refridgerators
Maytag Ovens

I'm running out of sanity.

Begrudgingly green

Normally, we do what we can to save energy but this is going a little too far. Our dryer went on a bender Saturday and refuses to work. What a pain.

We really did get a dog!!

On Tuesday May 5th I did a Pampered Chef party and my host told me she was moving and had to get rid of her dog.

I wanted a dog really bad but knew I had to talk Jason into it. After almost 24 hours Jason decided that having a dog again would be okay. So I called Deb and picked her up. Deb was thrilled to find a good home and I'm happy to have a dog.

She is a Yo-Chon. That means a Bichon mixed with a Yorkie. She is 3 years old, spaid, not due for shots till next year, she is housebroken and super well mannered. Right now she is asleep next to me typing. I think she's adorable. Jason thinks she looks like an overgrown rat.

The children are thrilled to have a dog again, and last night Sadie slept in Alyssa's bed.
